Travis Hunter Playing Only WR in 2nd Half of Win vs. 49ers Explained by Jaguars HC

Timothy RappSep 28, 2025

Travis Hunter didn't play any defensive snaps during the second half of the Jacksonville Jaguars' 26-21 win over the San Francisco 49ers, raising a few eyebrows.

After the game, head coach Liam Coen offered a fairly vague explanation for that usage:

Hunter played a much larger role on the offensive side of the ball Sunday, a reversal of how he had been trending in recent weeks:

Hunter was a full-time cornerback and wideout in college, but expecting him to play every snap on offense and defense at the professional level was always going to be unrealistic given how complicated the schemes are on both sides of the ball (not to mention the physical toll it would take).

Nonetheless, monitoring Hunter's usage has been an interesting subplot during the early stages of the 2025 season, especially because he's gotten off to a relatively modest start as a receiver (13 catches for 118 yards and no scores on 21 targets).

He did have a fantastic grab on Sunday, showing off his offensive upside:

Hunter's usage will continue to be a topic, especially if it continues to vary so much from week-to-week. For now, however, the Jaguars are 3-1 on the season and the vibes are strong in the Coen era, so Hunter's role is more a curiosity at this point than a source of major angst for fans.
