JJ Watt Shares Photo of Text to Jon Rahm During Ryder Cup Match, 'SETTLE DOWN'
Legendary NFL defensive lineman J.J. Watt attempted to do Team USA a solid Saturday amid the squad's struggles against Team Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup.
After Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton defeated the American duo of Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in morning foursomes on Saturday, a fan on X asked Watt if he could get Rahm to take it easy on Team USA.
Watt responded with a screenshot of a text he sent Rahm, which read, "JON. SETTLE DOWN. This is getting ridiculous."
Rahm and Hatton already have a pair of foursomes victories over two days at the 2025 Ryder Cup at the Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, giving them a perfect 4-0 record as a team in foursomes over the past two Ryder Cups, per Sports Illustrated's Bob Harig.
Additionally, Rahm and Sepp Straka beat Scottie Scheffler and J.J. Spaun in afternoon four-balls on Friday, giving Rahm a perfect 3-0 record thus far at this Ryder Cup.
At the conclusion of Saturday morning foursomes, Europe held a commanding 8.5-3.5 lead over the United States, which is tied for the largest lead by a road team after three sessions in the modern era of the Ryder Cup, per Justin Ray of The Athletic.
Watt and Rahm played together at the 2023 Annexus Pro-Am at TPC Scottsdale, which may have been the genesis of their friendship.
The stakes are much higher for Rahm in the 2025 Ryder Cup than they were in that particular tournament, and the Spaniard has risen to the occasion.
Rahm is the 2021 U.S. Open champion and 2023 Masters champion, and he was once the top-ranked player in the world, but he has since dropped all the way down to No. 73 due to a combination of uneven play and the fact that he has prioritized LIV Golf events over DP World Tour tournaments.
Despite Rahm's ranking, Luke Donald made him one of his six captain's picks, and that decision has already paid huge dividends.
Europe is the defending Ryder Cup champion, as Europe and the United States have traded wins at the past five Ryder Cups.
However, if the Europeans are victorious at Bethpage Black, it will mark the first Ryder Cup road victory since Europe won at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, in 2012.
During a 12-year NFL career with the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals, Watt knew a thing or two about stepping up in tough road games, which is a big reason why he racked up 114.5 career sacks and won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award three times.
Rahm has channeled his inner road warrior thus far as well, and it is a big reason why Europe is now heavily favored to win a second consecutive Ryder Cup.
