Mets' Mendoza on MLB Wild Card Race vs. Reds, 'We Put Ourselves in This Position'

Adam WellsSep 27, 2025

Heading into the final two days of the 2025 MLB regular season, the New York Mets are going to need some help to make the playoffs after a 6-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night.

Speaking to reporters after his team's defeat, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said "we put ourselves in this position" where they could miss out on the postseason even if they win out.

"Here we are. We've got to come back tomorrow and the next day now. We've got to win the next two and see what happens," Mendoza added.

New York's loss combined with the Cincinnati Reds' 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers gave the two teams identical 82-78 records, but the Reds hold the tiebreaker and are now in position to win the final wild card spot in the NL.

The Mets have been in free fall for awhile now. Since moving a season-high 21 games over .500 on June 12 (45-24), they are 37-53 in their last 91 games. The only teams with a worse record during that span are the Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Twins, Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox.

As recently as Sept. 5, the Mets were tied with the San Diego Padres for the final two wild card spots. The Reds were ninth in the NL standings, six games behind the Mets and Padres.

Cincinnati hasn't exactly taken control of things with a 12-7 record in its last 19 games, but the Mets have lost 13 of their last 19 games to open the door.

Saturday could mark the end of the Mets' postseason hopes. If they lose and the Reds win, Cincinnati clinches the final wild card spot regardless of what happens on Sunday.

It would be a disastrous outcome for the Mets given their expectations coming into the year and how this season started.
