Joe Burrow Says 'This Game Will Break Your Heart' After Toe Injury, 'See You Soon'

Zach BacharSep 26, 2025

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow posted a message on Instagram after suffering a turf toe injury during the team's 31-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.

"This game will break your heart," Burrow wrote in the caption of Friday's post. "See you soon."

He underwent toe surgery on Sept. 19 and was subsequently placed on injured reserve.

Burrow's exact recovery timeline is uncertain, although ESPN's Adam Schefter was pessimistic about his chances of returning before the end of the 2025 season.

The 28-year-old has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL when healthy, leading the league with 4,918 yards through the air and 43 touchdown passes during his 2024 campaign. He also completed 70.6 percent of his throws, finishing No. 4 in AP MVP voting.

While Burrow's tenure with the Bengals has included multiple deep playoff runs and a Super Bowl appearance, it's also been largely defined by injuries.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft's rookie season came to an end after 10 games due to a torn ACL and MCL. In 2023, Burrow was also limited to 10 games after he suffered a wrist injury in Week 11 that ultimately required surgery and kept him out for the remainder of the year.

The Bengals will continue to rely on backup Jake Browning in his absence.

While Browning looked sharp when filling in for Burrow during the win over the Jaguars, he struggled mightily throughout a lopsided 48-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

He finished 19-of-27 for 140 yards and one touchdowns compared to a pair of interceptions. Cinncinnati was only able to muster 171 yards as a team.

As the Bengals continue to navigate through the season without Burrow under center, they'll attempt to improve to 3-1 when they face the Denver Broncos on Monday.
