49ers' Brock Purdy, Jauan Jennings Out vs. Cardinals as Mac Jones Makes 2nd Start

Scott PolacekSep 21, 2025

The San Francisco 49ers will once again be shorthanded for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported quarterback Brock Purdy will remain sidelined with a toe injury, while wide receiver Jauan Jennings will not play because of shoulder and ankle injuries. Jennings was listed as questionable for the contest.

With Purdy out, Mac Jones will remain the starting quarterback and be backed up by Adrian Martinez.

The Jennings injury is worrisome for San Francisco because Brandon Aiyuk is still sidelined as he recovers from last season's knee injury. Tight end George Kittle is also sidelined, meaning the aerial attack will be without three of its presumed top options.

Jennings has seven catches for 105 yards and one touchdown through the first two games. Ricky Pearsall is the only other wide receiver on the team with more than three catches, and he will likely see even more opportunities against the Cardinals.

As for Purdy, he was listed as questionable but not expected to play in Sunday's contest.

"I think it's highly unlikely that he will start," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Friday. "We're just trying to see where he's at to see if he can be a [No.] 2 or an emergency [No.] 3."

While Purdy will not be active in any capacity, the 49ers can at least take solace knowing Jones impressed in the last game against the New Orleans Saints. He went 26-of-39 for 279 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions in a 26-21 victory.

Jones never fully lived up to expectations with the New England Patriots as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, but he looked every bit the part of someone who can keep the offense afloat in San Francisco when Purdy is out.

He will get another chance to do just that in a key NFC West divisional game on Sunday.
