Brisbane Roar vs. Liverpool: Score and Reaction from 2015 Pre-Season Friendly

Rory MarsdenJul 17, 2015

Liverpool produced a battling 2-1 win against Brisbane Roar at the Suncorp Stadium on Friday in their second pre-season match.

Following their recent 4-0 drubbing of Thailand All-Stars in Bangkok, the Reds found themselves 1-0 down to the A-League side following Dimi Petratos' 17th-minute strike.

Adam Lallana responded with the equaliser just before the half-hour mark, and recent signing James Milner found the winner 15 minutes from time.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers fielded a host of new signings in his starting XI, including Milner and Danny Ings:

Milner and captain Jordan Henderson were marked out for particular praise from the boss after the encounter, while new defender Joe Gomez was assured of his future, per the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce:

The early tempo was sluggish, with Milner shooting wide after three minutes, but the Roar enjoyed some decent possession.

The game was blown wide open, however, when 22-year-old Petratos was squared the ball on the edge of the box and stepped to the penalty spot before firing an impressive finish past Simon Mignolet on 17 minutes.

The less-than-prolific attacking midfielder showed impressive poise to get the ball out of his feet and score a terrific goal, per Fox Sports Lab:

Conceding early seemed to jerk Liverpool out the doldrums, and Ings drew a terrific save from Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young in the 24th minute.

Young was powerless to keep out Lallana four minutes later, though. The former Southampton man received the ball on the left of the penalty area, tricked his way past an opponent and fired a curling shot into the left corner.

The teams went into the break level, and it was tight and cagey in the opening exchanges after half-time.

Henderson almost put his side ahead just after the hour, but Young produced yet another brilliant save.

The 29-year-old—familiar to Rodgers, per This Is Anfield—put in a wonderful performance, and he kept his side in the game:

However, new man Milner finally put the visitors ahead with 15 minutes remaining as he received the ball on the edge of the box, jinked past a defender and saw his shot deflected home for the eventual winner.

The Reds were hardly troubled in the closing quarter of an hour, and the final whistle confirmed their hard-fought victory.

It was an encouraging performance from Liverpool and saw decent showings from Gomez and young winger Jordan Ibe, per Pearce:

Rodgers was understandably pleased that his side continued their winning pre-season campaign, and Liverpool will hope they can begin the new Premier League term in top form.
