49ers' Brock Purdy Gives Update on Toe Injury, Status Ahead of Week 3 vs. Cardinals

Julia StumbaughSep 18, 2025

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy said Thursday he is "day-to-day" with his toe injury ahead of Sunday's Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Purdy, who sat out last Sunday's Week 2 win over the New Orleans Saints with the injury, told reporters he is "happy with the progress that I've been making."

"More than anything, it's just going to be a day-to-day thing on how I feel," Purdy said (h/t The Athletic's Vic Tafur).

Purdy participated in practice for a second straight day on Thursday, per David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard.

He described the toe injury on Thursday as the result of an "accumulation of certain plays," and said he hadn't realized something was wrong until his adrenaline died down after the game.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan had previously told reporters that Purdy was also dealing with an injury in his non-throwing shoulder, but that the toe was the more significant of the two.

Purdy was limited as limited with both injuries on the 49ers injury report for both Thursday and Friday's practices.

The quarterback participated in individual throwing drills during Wednesday's practice, as seen in videos shared by ESPN's Nick Wagoner.

However, The Athletic's Matt Barrows reported he saw neither Purdy nor any of the other 49ers quarterbacks did "anything more than jog" on Wednesday.

Purdy was seen throwing again on Thursday after Mac Jones and Adrian Martinez, per CBS Sports' Matt Lively.

After telling reporters ahead of Week 2 that Purdy was a "long shot" to play against the Saints, Shanahan sounded slightly more optimistic when he said earlier this week that Purdy "has a chance" to play against the Cardinals on Sunday.

"We got to see how the toe goes. It's very up to debate. So we're just taking it a day at a time," Shanahan said after Sunday's win, per NBC Sports' Joaquin Ruiz.

Rapoport reported ahead of Week 2 that Purdy had suffered a variant of a turf toe injury and could miss between two and five weeks.

Turf toe is defined by Cleveland Clinic as hyperextension of the toe that can lean to stretch or torn soft tissues and ligaments. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow recently suffered a turf toe injury necessitating surgery.

If Purdy is unable to play by Sunday, Mac Jones will look to ride the momentum of his career-high three-touchdown game against the Saints by leading the 49ers to another victory against the Cardinal.

Kickoff between the Cardinals and 49ers is set for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday at Levi's Stadium.
