Justin Fields Returns to Jets Practice amid Concussion Recovery Ahead of Dolphins Game

Zach BacharSep 25, 2025

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields is improving after suffering a concussion in Week 2.

Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters that Fields will practice with the team on Thursday, though he remains in concussion protocol.

Glenn went on to say that Fields will start on Monday night against the Miami Dolphins if he's cleared from the protocol.

Fields was placed in concussion protocol after New York's 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 and was later ruled out of the team's Week 3 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 26-year-old was off to an uneven start to his 2025 campaign prior to the concussion.

Fields completed 72.7 percent of his throws for 218 yards and three total touchdowns without committing a turnover during the Jets' season-opening defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He couldn't replicate the impact that he had against Pittsburgh when facing Buffalo, finishing 3-of-11 for just 27 yards. The former first-round pick also recorded two fumbles, losing one of them.

Fields is in the midst of his first season with the Jets after signing a two-year, $40 million contract to join the team as a free agent in March.

He spent his 2024 campaign as a member of the Steelers, completing 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns while getting picked off once in 10 games (six starts). The dual-threat quarterback also rushed for 289 yards.

Fields has dealt with several injuries throughout his first four years in the NFL, missing time as a rookie in 2021 with an ankle issue. He was declared out for multiple games in 2022 due to a separated left shoulder and made just 13 appearances during the ensuing season with a dislocated thumb.

Veteran passer Tyrod Taylor started in Week 3 with Fields unavailable. He went 26-of-36 for 197 yards with touchdowns and an interception through the air, while rushing for 48 yards on eight carries in a 29-27 loss to Tampa Bay.
