Cowboys DC Matt Eberflus Taking Part in Offensive Meetings to Prepare for Bears

Andrew PetersSep 17, 2025

The Dallas Cowboys are leaning on the experience of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus this week.

Ahead of the Cowboys' matchup against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, head coach Brian Schottenheimer had Eberflus—who was fired as the Bears' head coach last year after three seasons —sit in on the offensive staff meeting to share information about Chicago, per WFAA's Ed Werder.

While Eberflus has experience working with some of the current members of the Bears' roster, Chicago has a fresh coaching staff and will be putting together different schemes than the ones he used over the last few years.

Still, Eberflus knows the tendencies of some of the Bears' defensive players, so his experience should still be somewhat helpful for the offensive staff.

As for Eberflus' defensive game plan, his experience working with Bears' quarterback Caleb Williams should come in handy.

While Eberflus looks to use his experience in Chicago against his opponent, Bears coach Ben Johnson is leaning on those in his building who are familiar with Eberflus' game plans.

"Yeah, well, we've got guys in the building that know how his mind works," Johnson told reporters when asked about Eberflus knowing Williams' tendencies. "So we have some information on just schematically how he liked to approach my offense in general and his feelings on Caleb. I feel like we know what he knows and we'll be just fine there."

Through his first two games as the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, Eberflus has left much to be desired. Dallas lost its Week 1 matchup to the Philadelphia Eagles 24-20. The Cowboys won in Week 2 against the New York Giants, but Eberflus' defense struggled in the win.

Dallas gave up 37 points to the Giants, with quarterback Russell Wilson throwing for 450 yards and three touchdowns. The Cowboys can get away with that kind of defense if their offense is clicking, but it won't work when Dallas goes up against top defenses.

Luckily for Eberflus, he isn't exactly going up against a juggernaut offense this week. The Bears have put up 24 and 21 points in their first two games, and Williams has been average at best, throwing for 417 yards, three touchdowns and an interception so far.
