Bucs' Baker Mayfield Says 'We Don't Take Any S--t' After C.J. Gardner-Johnson Exchange

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield explained his on-field exchange with Houston Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the fourth quarter of Monday's game.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Mayfield said "we don't take any s--t" when asked about jumping right back up to talk trash to Gardner-Johnson after it appeared he suffered an injury to his leg on the play.

The play came in one of the biggest moments of the game when Mayfield scrambled for 15 yards on fourth-and-10 with just over one minute remaining in the fourth quarter to extend the Bucs' drive.

Mayfield and Gardner-Johnson had been going back and forth throughout the game. There was a play earlier when Mayfield also scrambled for a first down, took a hit to the knee/lower leg from the Texans safety and initially remained on the ground in pain.

When Gardner-Johnson approached Mayfield and said something, the Buccaneers quarterback popped up to engage him in trash talk. After Mayfield posted an image of the two from the game on his Instagram, Gardner-Johnson clapped back with a comment.

The feud between Mayfield and Gardner-Johnson goes back to at least the 2023 season. Gardner-Johnson, then a member of the Detroit Lions, took a swipe at Mayfield leading up to a playoff game against Tampa.

"If you give that Tampa group a good quarterback, that's a great group. [Mike] Evans, [Chris] Godwin, [Russell] Gage, that's a great group. I played against them for real," Gardner-Johnson said.

Gardner-Johnson backed up the talk by intercepting a pass and flipped the ball toward Mayfield after being run out of bounds.

Mayfield's fourth-down scramble was a key moment that helped springboard Tampa to score the go-ahead touchdown with six seconds remaining.

Time ran out on the Texans when Tremon Smith brought out the ensuing kickoff, dropping Houston to 0-2 this season. The Bucs improved to 2-0, marking the fifth consecutive year they have won their first two games of the season.
