Alex Ovechkin Launches Cereal That Celebrates NHL Goals Record, Supports Charity

Julia StumbaughSep 16, 2025

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is commemorating breaking the all-time NHL goalscoring record with a limited-edition cereal.

Ovi's Great Crunch will be sold at Giant Food stores in Washington, D.C., starting Friday, according to the Capitals.

A portion of sales from the "cornflakes-style" cereal will benefit THE GR8 CHASE for Victory Over Cancer, the team reported.

The cereal commemorates Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goalscoring record in April by scoring the 895th goal of his regular-season career against the New York Islanders.

Ovechkin finished his 20th NHL season having set a new all-time record of 897 career goals.

The GR8 CHASE for Victory Over Cancer website describes the initiative as a partnership between Ovechkin, the Capitals, Hockey Fights Cancer and the V Foundation created with the goal of funding pediatric cancer research.

Ovechkin had previously committed to donating money toward pediatric cancer research for every goal he scores for the rest of his career. The donations will be matched by Capitals ownership group Monumental Sports & Entertainment.

Giant Foods previously partnered with Ovechkin for the release of Ovi O's, a limited-edition honey nut cereal, in 2019. A portion of those sales went go the Maryland-based Children's Cancer Foundation, Inc.

The Ovi's Great Crunch cereal box features a photo of Ovechkin taking a shot while wearing the Capitals' Screaming Eagle third jersey from last season.

Caps fans will get to see Ovechkin wearing the Screaming Eagle once again during his 21st season with the team. The Capitals recently announced players would be wearing the alternate logo, this time on a red background, during 15 home games next season.

Ovechkin and the Capitals are set to begin ramping up to the 2025-26 season when training camp opens Thursday at MedStars Capitals Iceplex.
