WWE Battleground 2015: Biggest Themes Established in Build to Event

Sunday night, WWE presents its Battleground pay-per-view, a show that features Seth Rollins defending the world heavyweight title against Brock Lesnar in the most anticipated match this summer and Roman Reigns looking to end the torment and mind games displayed by Bray Wyatt over the last month when they meet one-on-one.

It is a show that will set the table for SummerSlam, one of the most important events of the entire year, and determine which Superstars will make their presences felt when they roll into Brooklyn and the Barclays Center for the monumental show.

Thus, the importance of the event cannot be understated.

Heading into Sunday's broadcast, WWE has established a few themes that will fuel the show. They feature the night's biggest stars and center around the most anticipated matches on the card.

What are they, and how have they laid the groundwork for the event?

Brock's Vengeance

For months, Brock Lesnar sat at home and stewed over the screwjob that unfolded at WrestleMania 31, when Seth Rollins interrupted that night's main event between the Beast Incarnate and Roman Reigns, cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase and walked out with Lesnar's WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

He has anxiously anticipated the opportunity to get his hands on the Architect, and at Battleground, he will, when he meets Rollins one-on-one in the night's marquee bout.

Lesnar has been on a rampage over the last few weeks, destroying brand new cars with the assistance of an ax and using the steel ring steps to break Kane's ankle. In the process, he has systematically dismantled Rollins' support system, leaving him with no one to watch his back come Sunday night.

It is exactly the scenario Lesnar hoped for as he attempts to not only take back his title, but also destroy the man who stole it from him in the first place.

"Anyone But You"

Since Money in the Bank, Bray Wyatt has made it his mission to keep Roman Reigns from ascending the ladder in WWE, interfering in matches and preventing him from picking up victories. The reasoning? Wyatt cannot stand to see Reigns succeed.

He sees him as the opposite of the Reaper of Souls. To Wyatt, Reigns is everything he is not, and he is unwilling to sit back and watch him achieve the success that he has been unable to attain at this point.

"Anyone but you" has become the battle cry for the New Face of Fear as he continues to play mind games with the juggernaut. He has threatened Reigns' daughter and left the Royal Rumble winner lying on more than one occasion.

Now at Battleground, he will have the opportunity to halt his momentum completely if Wyatt can collect his biggest win of 2015.

Respect

For months, the dangerous Kevin Owens has established himself on the main roster by targeting the WWE United States champion John Cena.

At Elimination Chamber, he scored the biggest win of his career by defeating the franchise player clean in the center of the ring. Weeks later at Money in the Bank, he was pinned for the first time in his WWE career, then proceeded to show absolutely no respect whatsoever to Cena by pummeling him and delivering his vaunted apron powerbomb, leaving the leader of the Cenation to be helped out of the arena.

Owens has been extremely nonchalant when it comes to showing his fellow Superstars respect, instead doing what was best for him and only him when the time came.

He is preparing to win his first major singles title on the main roster and will do so against Cena, a man determined to beat respect into him.

Will the most prominent face in wrestling succeed, or will the company enter a darker, more sinister era lacking respect and admiration with an Owens victory?
