NFL Exec Says Playoff Bracket Seeding 'Means Nothing to Mahomes' as Chiefs Start 0-2

Joseph ZuckerSep 15, 2025

History isn't on the Kansas City Chiefs' side in terms of making the NFL playoffs following an 0-2 start, but some around the league aren't making any assumptions about the three-time reigning AFC champions.

Kansas City lost a Super Bowl LIX rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles, 20-17, on Sunday. While there are some exceptions, the vast majority of teams that dropped their first two games missed the postseason.

Still, The Athletic's Mike Sando spoke to one AFC executive who puts little stock in how the Chiefs will at the very least struggle to earn a high seed in the conference.

"Which means nothing to [quarterback Patrick] Mahomes. Ask Baltimore," the exec said.

The Baltimore Ravens were the AFC's top seed in 2023 and finished two games better than Kansas City. That didn't stop the Chiefs from going into M&T Bank Stadium and winning the AFC Championship Game.

Sando also spoke to a coach who's similarly who's viewing Mahomes and Co. with a glass half full mindset.

"I don't think there is a crisis being 0-2 when you play two good teams to start," they said. "But it does not look like they had the rigorous four-week training camp at the away college that hardly anyone else goes to anymore, when I look at the timing of their offense."

From a Chiefs perspective, look no further than last year for evidence why it's premature to panic. The Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams all made the playoffs after starting 0-2. In the case of the Rams, they had just one win through five games.

Kansas City has some glaring concerns that could doom an 11th straight trip to the postseason, though.

Mahomes was the Chiefs' leading rusher in each of their first two games. The passing game has still never replaced Tyreek Hill, and tight end Travis Kelce is showing his age (35) even more.

Maybe everything will click for the offense in time for Kansas City to secure a wild-cad berth or challenge for another AFC West crown. Sooner or later, the team's personnel issues might be too much for even Mahomes to overcome.
