Dillon Gabriel Not Being Considered to Replace Joe Flacco as Browns' QB1, per HC

Timothy RappSep 14, 2025

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel was given garbage-time snaps during Sunday's 41-17 blowout loss against the Baltimore Ravens.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters after the game, however, that the team wasn't considering a change at the position:

"I don't think it's fair to talk about that right now," he said. "We win as a team, we lose as a team," he told reporters.

Flacco also commented on the matter.

"I can't worry about that stuff anyway," he told reporters. "It's honestly not on my mind. I gotta go out there and just play my game, play the way I know how to lead this team the best I can."

Flacco didn't have a banner Sunday, throwing for 199 yards, a touchdown and an interception while taking two sacks and losing a fumble. Gabriel was 3-for-3 for 19 yards and a touchdown on his lone drive.

The belief has been that Flacco was little more than a bridge starter, keeping the position warm for either Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders. With Gabriel installed as the backup, he'll get the first crack at the position once the Browns decide to bench Flacco. The question is when they'll make that transition.

For now, it makes sense to stick with Flacco. The team is 0-2, yes, but there's plenty of season left and Stefanski clearly believes that Flacco either gives the Browns the best chance to win right now or simply wants Gabriel to have more time to develop.

If the losses pile up and the season is lost, however, getting Gabriel experience will be the best course of action. The Browns are already trending in that direction, but it's only September.
