Giants Reportedly Have 'No Sense of Urgency' to Bench Russell Wilson for Jaxson Dart

Zach BacharSep 13, 2025

The New York Giants have "no sense of urgency" to bench Russell Wilson in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll didn't commit to Wilson as the starting quarterback immediately after a season-opening 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders, but eventually confirmed that the veteran passer would remain New York's starter in Week 2 on Monday.

Wilson struggled against Washington, completing just 46 percent of his throws for 168 yards without tossing a touchdown or an interception. He averaged only 4.5 yards per attempt.

The 36-year-old doesn't project as New York's long-term option under center regardless of his 2025 performance, as he signed a one-year deal to join the team in March.

One month later, the Giants traded back into the first round of the 2025 NFL draft to select Dart with the No. 25 overall pick.

While Dart remained behind Wilson on New York's depth chart throughout the offseason, he showed promise across three preseason appearances.

The first-year passer threw for 372 yards and three touchdowns without getting picked off, compiling a 68.1 completion percentage.

New York could be taking a cautious approach with Dart due to its upcoming schedule, as five of its next seven games will occur against teams that made the postseason in 2024. Understandably, the Giants may want to ease him into NFL action instead of letting him make his debut against a playoff-tested defense.

Schefter also noted Saturday that the absence of left tackle Andrew Thomas with a Lisfranc injury makes it harder for the Giants to "speed up their timeline" and play Dart.

For now, Wilson will continue to start when New York faces the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
