Rizzo, who was honored by the fans of his former team before a matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, nearly caught a home run ball from Cubs designated hitter Moisés Ballesteros in the bottom of the second inning.

Happ discussed Rizzo's legacy in Chicago before the game.

"Such a great leader," Happ told reporters. "Such a great human, the way he gave back to the city. He was the foundation, the building block of turning the Cubs into the expectation of being in the playoffs and winning. He always set the standard."

Rizzo played for the Cubs from 2012 through the start of the 2021 season, ranking No. 6 on the team's all-time home run list with 242 homers.

He blossomed into a three-time All-Star in Chicago and played a key role as part of the club's World Series-winning roster in 2016, snapping the franchise's 108-year championship drought.

Rizzo finished with a team-high 109 RBI that season and stepped up during a World Series matchup with the Cleveland Guardians, posting a .360/.484/.600 slash line during the series.

He was traded to the New York Yankees in 2021, with injuries later taking a toll on him before officially announcing his retirement on Wednesday.

Happ, who has spent his entire nine-year career with the Cubs, made his team debut in 2017. He was teammates with Rizzo for just over four years.

This season, Happ is hitting .241 with 21 home runs, 28 doubles and 68 RBI.
