Giants' Jaxson Dart 'Ready Whenever My Number Is Called' If Wilson Struggles Continue

Julia StumbaughSep 12, 2025

New York Giants backup quarterback Jaxson Dart says he is ready to play "whenever" he is called upon to make his NFL debut.

Dart was asked Friday about a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo that the Giants had prepared a "package of plays" for him ahead last Sunday's Week 1 matchup with the Washington Commanders.

Veteran starter Russell Wilson ultimately played the entirety of the Giants' 21-6 season-opening loss.

"I don't know if it's as much a package of plays. I'm just preparing for whatever chance that I get," Dart told reporters Friday. "There's not a specific game plan or anything like that. It's me just trying to be prepared, and be ready whenever my number is called."

Dart also said he sees his current job on the Giants as being "the best teammate" for Wilson.

"Just him coming off on the sideline, us just having talks. It's a long season... my job is just to be there for Russ, and be the best teammate, so that's my approach," Dart said.

Giants coach Brian Daboll confirmed Monday that Wilson would remain the team's starting quarterback after the Week 1 loss.

"We're doing everything we can do, each week, to develop Jaxson," Daboll said Monday. "He spends a lot of time in the building, spends a lot of time after practice going through things that he needs to go through to prepare himself to be, if he gets called upon, to be ready to go."

When asked if his decision regarding the QB1 position going forward would be based on Wilson's status or on Dart's, Daboll answered, "We'll just do what we think is best for our football team."

Dart was named the Giants' QB2 over veteran Jameis Winston after impressing the Giants with a strong performance through three preseason games.

He is set to resume his role as Wilson's backup when the Giants return to action Sunday with a Week 2 road game against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys.
