John Harbaugh Told Ravens They're 'Not Mature Enough as a Team,' Marlon Humphrey Says

Adam WellsSep 12, 2025

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh didn't mince words about his team in the aftermath of their dramatic 41-40 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.

Cornerback Marlon Humphrey told reporters that Harbaugh told them they are "not mature enough as a team" at this point, even though they have a lot of talent:

"He said we're just not mature enough as a team yet. It's very clear we've got great players on both sides of the ball, but defensively, we have to work on our maturity, too. It doesn't matter what our offense is doing. We have to go up there and win the game. Right now, our maturity level, sadly, when we get in those situations, it's just not enough."

In a marquee opening-week matchup between arguably the two best teams in the AFC, the Ravens led by as many as 15 at two different points in the game, including late in the fourth quarter.

The Bills closed the game with 22 points in the final period to steal a 41-40 victory. Baltimore's usually stout defense gave up 497 total yards, including 269 in the fourth quarter.

While Harbaugh's sentiment isn't incorrect that the Ravens are still figuring out who they are because every season is different and one game doesn't define a season, it's hard to ignore how a team that's consistently among the best in the NFL has so many losses in which they blow a multi-score lead in the fourth quarter.

The Bills' 497 yards were the most allowed by Baltimore since Week 2 of the 2022 season against the Miami Dolphins (547). There's no shame in getting picked apart by Josh Allen because that happens to every team.

As long as the Ravens can tighten things up going forward, they should be fine in the AFC. They did put up 40 points, so it's not as if things were all bad.

This week will give the Ravens a chance to rebound when they host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
