Sydney Sweeney Stars in 'Christy' Trailer About Iconic Boxer Christy Martin

Boxing legend Christy Martin is getting the biopic treatment in a new movie starring Sydney Sweeney.

On Thursday, Black Bear Pictures dropped the official trailer for Christy ahead of its Nov. 7 theatrical release.

The trailer, set to "Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks, starts with Sweeney as Martin meeting legendary promoter Don King (Chad L. Coleman) as she embarks on the start of her professional boxing career.

Martin is joined at the meeting by her then-husband and manager James Martin (Ben Foster). Other cast members include Merritt Wever as Joyce, Christy's mother, and Ethan Embry as John, Christy's father.

The real-life Christy Martin helped usher in the modern era of women's boxing thanks in large part to her legendary 1996 bout with Deirdre Gogarty on undercard of the Mike Tyson-Frank Bruno pay-per-view.

Martin went 49-7-3 in 59 career professional fights and won the WBC female super welterweight title in 2009 by defeating Dakota Stone. She was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.

In addition to her career in the ring, Martin led a turbulent life outside of it that the trailer gets into. She survived being shot and stabbed multiple times by James Martin in November 2010 after informing him she wanted a divorce.

Martin has said the marriage was violent before that incident. She has since publicly come out as a lesbian and married fellow boxer Lisa Holewyne. The two squared off in the ring in November 2001, with Martin winning by unanimous decision.

Christy had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 5. The early festival reaction for Sweeney's performance in the title role has been very positive.

The movie is getting a prime award season release date nationwide on Nov. 7.
