Patrick Mahomes Says It Will Take Chiefs' 'Best' to Beat Eagles in Super Bowl Rematch

Paul KasabianSep 10, 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in a rematch of Super Bowl LIX last February, when the Eagles led 34-0 en route to a 40-22 win.

On Wednesday, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke with reporters and gave the Eagle defense great respect while saying it'll take his team's "best" effort to win (h/t ESPN's Nate Taylor).

Kansas City's first nine possessions in the Super Bowl ended with six punts, a turnover-on-downs and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown and another that led to a TD two plays later.

The Eagles found themselves up 34-0 with 2:40 left in the third quarter, but the Chiefs finally showed signs of life in the final quarter-plus, with Mahomes throwing for three touchdowns (two to wide receiver Xavier Worthy).

However, the Eagles' early onslaught led to a win over the Chiefs en route to their second Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

Mahomes will presumably enter this Week 2 matchup without Worthy, who suffered a dislocated right shoulder in a 27-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Friday in São Paulo, Brazil.

He hasn't been ruled out officially for Sunday, although given the severity of the injury and the fact that he missed practice Wednesday and is currently "rehabbing," per head coach Andy Reid, it may be safe to assume that he will not play.

The Chiefs are also still without wide receiver Rashee Rice, who will serve the second game of a six-game suspension for a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Kansas City does have talented pass-catchers otherwise, notably tight end Travis Kelce and Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, but it may take the team's best effort to knock off the Eagles.

Of course, it helps to have Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP who was a magician at times against the Bolts en route to 315 total yards (258 passing, 57 rushing) and two scores (one passing, one rushing).

Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
