Justin Jefferson Fantasy Outlook amid J.J. McCarthy, Vikings' 1H Struggles vs. Bears

Andrew PetersSep 8, 2025

Justin Jefferson fantasy manager might have panicked after the first half of the Minnesota Vikings' Monday Night Football matchup against the Chicago Bears.

Jefferson, who is playing alongside quarterback J.J. McCarthy for the first time, had just one reception for four yards plus a carry for four yards in the first half.

Jefferson turned things around somewhat in the second half and finished with four receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown, but it was far from his typical production.

McCarthy also managed to put together a decent game, leading the Vikings on three consecutive scoring drives in the fourth quarter. He finished with 143 yards, three total touchdowns and an interception.

While Jefferson, McCarthy and the Vikings' offense didn't look great early on, head coach Kevin O'Connell has helped plenty of quarterbacks thrive over the years, and that could very well be the case again this year.

Jefferson has managed to thrive no matter who is quarterback is. He and Kirk Cousins had a great connection early in his career, but he still found a way to go for more than 1,000 yards in 2023 when Cousins' season ended after just eight games and Jefferson played just 10 games.

Last year, Jefferson played with a new quarterback, Sam Darnold, and recorded 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Much of Jefferson's success can be attributed to him as a player, but O'Connell deserves some recognition as well. Cousins had some of the best seasons of his career while playing for O'Connell, while Darnold went from a career backup to an MVP candidate with the Vikings.

O'Connell is likely facing his biggest challenge yet as he tries to lead a team with a first-year quarterback. Unfortunately for fantasy managers, whether McCarthy can figure things out early will directly impact Jefferson's success.

If having McCarthy under center proves to be unsuccessful, the Vikings can always turn to veteran Carson Wentz.

Still, it's probably too early for fans to give up on Jefferson and trade him away. Even if he isn't on track for a career year in 2025, he'll always find a way to be productive and get fantasy managers some points.
