Martinez Dismisses Evans Rumours

Friday, July 17

"It's not true. There's nothing," said Martinez when asked about Evans' link to Everton, per ESPN. "I always said I'm not going to be commenting publicly on any of the names that have been shared around but I can tell you clearly that there is nothing true in that story."

Martinez's denial came the day after Mark Ogden of the Telegraph and Ian Ladyman of the MailOnline claimed the two clubs were close to agreeing a deal for the Northern Ireland international, who has one year remaining on his Red Devils contract.

Ogden claimed the fee for the 27-year-old would be £8 million, while Ladyman suggested a transfer fee of £7 million.

Alex Shaw of ESPN doesn’t think it would the best move for the Toffees:

Despite being much maligned, Evans has won three Premier League titles with the Red Devils. But a loss of form and perennial injury problems have seen him fall down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

With Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz having left Goodison Park this summer, the Merseyside club do need a solid defender despite Martinez's dismissal of the Evans rumour.

A fresh start and game time is what Evans needs to rekindle his career, but it is tough to see him ousting either Everton skipper Phil Jagielka or the immaculate young centre-back John Stones, who has been linked with Chelsea, per Sky Sports News HQ, for a spot in Everton's starting XI any time soon.
