Kendrick Bourne, 49ers Agree to Contract After George Kittle, Jauan Jennings Injuries

Doric SamSep 8, 2025

After losing star tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Jauan Jennings to injuries in Sunday's win over the Seattle Seahawks, the San Francisco 49ers turned to a familiar face to bolster their passing attack.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers and veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne agreed to a one-year contract with a maximum value of $5 million. Bourne began his career in San Francisco in 2017 and spent four seasons with the franchise.

Bourne was an undrafted free agent when he first joined the 49ers. He later signed with the New England Patriots in 2021. After achieving career highs of 55 catches, 800 yards and five touchdowns in his first year in New England, his numbers dwindled after dealing with injuries over the past three years. The Patriots released him after the roster cuts deadline prior to this season.

Kittle exited Sunday's game against the Seahawks in the first half after suffering a hamstring injury. He recorded four catches for 25 yards and a touchdown before going down. His backup, Jake Tonges, played a key role in the victory with three catches, including the go-ahead four-yard touchdown reception with 1:34 left in the fourth quarter.

Jennings, who requested to be traded this offseason before having the final year of his contract restructured, suffered a shoulder injury after notching two catches for 16 yards. It was reported on the Fox broadcast that he "can barely lift his arm."

Despite losing two of his top targets, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy showed poise as he led the team over the Seahawks. Adding Bourne should provide some more security alongside second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall.

The 49ers will look for their second straight win when they visit the New Orleans Saints (0-1) in Week 2.
