Bryce Young Slams Helmet, Panthers HC Canales Coy on What QB Said in Viral Video

Joseph ZuckerSep 8, 2025

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales declined to specify what quarterback Bryce Young said as he slammed his helmet during the third quarter of Sunday's 26-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Fox cameras caught a brief exchange between Canales and Young after Carolina couldn't convert on a 4th-and-1 from the Jaguars 5-yard line in the third quarter. Young then threw his helmet down.

Canales told reporters after the game that Young's remarks in that moment weren't directed at him and are "something he and I will work through, talk about."

Young acknowledged he "definitely could do a better job of body language there" in reference to the viral moment and added his frustration was about the offense's execution.

"Just something that was going on with not executing," he said. "When you're not executing, it sucks. But I have to do a better job as a leader."

The Panthers and their fans came into 2025 hopeful that Young turned a corner following his midseason benching last year. After reclaiming the starting job, he threw for 2,104 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions in 10 appearances. He had a passer rating above 100.0 in each of his last three starts.

It took one game to dash a lot of that optimism.

Young went 18-of-35 for 154 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Jaguars.

Overreactions are inevitable after the opening week. In the case of Carolina, there's already the fear that Young is back to being a bust and that the team is headed toward another losing record.

Should his franchise quarterback fail to improve over the next few weeks, Canales may be forced to make a tough decision again.
