Derrick Henry Takes Blame for Loss to Bills, Put Ravens in 'A Bad Spot' with Fumble

Joseph ZuckerSep 8, 2025

While Derrick Henry had a big performance to open the 2025 NFL season, the Baltimore Ravens running back couldn't look past his costly fumble in a 41-40 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Henry coughed it up with a little over three minutes left, which set up a one-yard touchdown run by Josh Allen to bring the Bills to within two points.

The five-time Pro Bowler held himself accountable after the game, telling reporters he "put the team in a bad spot."

There's no question Henry's turnover was another setback for Baltimore at the worst possible time. The game was swinging in the Bills' direction, and forcing a fumble inside Ravens territory further fueled Buffalo's belief that a comeback was in the cards.

If Henry deserves some blame for the defeat, then he also deserves credit for helping his team build a lead in the first place. He ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns, the second of which put Baltimore up by 15 points with 11:42 left in the fourth quarter.

In terms of apportioning blame, the Baltimore defense is far more culpable for Sunday night. The Bills scored 22 points and Allen had 251 passing yards in the final frame.

This was a defensive meltdown of sizable proportions.

Tyler Loop's missed PAT after the Ravens' final touchdown also played a role in the outcome. The game is going into overtime if he makes that.

A lot of fans are looking at head coach John Harbaugh as well. Throwing away big leads has happened far too often for a franchise as consistently good as the Ravens.

Getting into the blame game after a tough loss doesn't really serve any purpose for Baltimore. The team can only learn from its mistakes and look ahead to a Week 2 matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

For Henry specifically, he shouldn't be too hard on himself when he was far from alone in slipping up in the fourth quarter.
