Brock Purdy, CMC Excite 49ers Fans as Comeback Spoils Darnold, Kupp's Seahawks Debut
Backup tight end Jake Tonges was the unexpected hero for the San Francisco 49ers, hauling in the game-winning touchdown — his first career NFL reception — as Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers pulled off a gritty 17-13 road win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
Purdy completed 26-of-35 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. McCaffrey added 22 carries for 69 yards, while George Kittle caught one touchdown on four receptions for 25 yards before exiting with an injury. Ricky Pearsall led all receivers with 108 yards on just four catches while Nick Bosa forced a game-sealing fumble to escape with the victory.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
For Seattle, Sam Darnold completed 16-of-23 passes for 150 yards in his debut as starting quarterback. Cooper Kupp was limited to two receptions for 15 yards, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba finished with 124 yards on nine catches but fumbled twice — one resulting in a turnover.
Purdy and McCaffrey sparked excitement with their second-half comeback, spoiling the Seahawks' season opener with their revamped lineup.
Purdy opened the game with a touchdown pass to Kittle, capping a dominant 8:22 drive as the 49ers took a 7-0 lead over the Seahawks in the first quarter. Kittle exited shortly after with a hamstring injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Seattle responded early in the second with a 1-yard touchdown run by Zach Charbonnet. After a missed 27-yard field goal by Jake Moody, the Seahawks closed the half with a 48-yard field goal from Jason Myers to take a 10-7 lead into the break.
The 49ers struggled offensively in the second half, with Purdy throwing an interception on the first play of the third quarter. Moody's woes continued with a blocked 36-yard attempt late in the third.
In the fourth, Seattle's Smith-Njigba fumbled, setting up a 49ers field goal to tie the game at 10. But Purdy was intercepted again with 7:06 left, and the Seahawks capitalized with a field goal and drained the clock to secure the 13-10 win.
On a near-interception play, Purdy scrambled and found Tonges — stepping in for the injured Kittle — for his first career touchdown, giving the 49ers the go-ahead score. Bosa sealed the game on the defensive end, sacking Darnold and forcing a fumble at the Seahawks' 16-yard line to put a bow on the gritty win.
The 49ers will travel to take on the New Orleans Saints next Sunday.
