Buy or Sell New John Cena WWE Dates, Brock Lesnar's Contract, AJ Lee Latest and More

Chris RolingSep 6, 2025

Attempting to keep pace with the pro wrestling rumor mill is an act of attrition right now.

Chalk it up as a good problem to have, though. A busy mill means major return rumors, booking plans for big events and an overall busy schedule that keeps things interesting.

Case in point, WWE is hardly past its last PLE and now Wrestlepalooza looms on September 20. There's minimal time to build up feuds and matches for the major show in Indianapolis, which happens to be the first big PLE on ESPN.

Given the stakes involved as this new TKO-fueled WWE attempts to break further into the mainstream, the rumor mill is alight with buzz, to say the least.

To help fans keep pace here's a look at the most important rumors to know and whether fans should buy or sell on each.

Next NXT Call-up?

1 of 5
NXT

The Rumor

Speculating about the next major call-up from NXT is always fun. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Andrew Ravens of WrestlingNews), that honor could go to Tony D'Angelo.

Reaction

The report goes on to state that creative discussions continue to loop in D'Angelo's mob-like character and that a main-roster promotion could happen before the end of the year. Those feel like super obvious talking points, yet they're nice to see regardless for one of the best acts going in WWE right now.

Buy or Sell?

Buy. WWE has a bloat problem on the main roster given how talented and deep it is. Yet, there are only so many ways to keep a name like D'Angelo off the main roster. Getting him more exposure is the next step to something potentially much bigger.

John Cena's Last SmackDown?

2 of 5
WWE - Clash In Paris

The Rumor

The speculation around John Cena's retirement tour continues. This time, it's WrestleVotes reporting that some within WWE are "quietly expecting" Friday's September 5 edition of SmackDown to be his last appearance on the blue brand ever.

Reaction

As the report goes on to note, this would mean Cena's SmackDown tenure started in Chicago's Allstate Arena so many years ago and will now end there, too. A fairy-tale-like and fitting career arc on the blue brand for Cena, if true.

Buy or Sell?

Sell, mostly because plans always change in pro wrestling and Cena appears to have a number of dates left before his final goodbye. And knowing WWE, they would have gone overboard promoting it as Cena's last stop on the blue brand…right?

AJ Lee Buzz

Wizard World Chicago Comic Con 2013 - Day 3

The Rumor

AJ Lee runs WWE right now, at least when it comes to rumors. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats) reported that WWE has attempted multiple times to get Lee back. Fightful Select (h/t Ortman) had previously reported that if and when Lee returns, it won't likely be a one-off thing.

Reaction

Fans have been clamoring for a Lee return since well before CM Punk finally came back. That he's back only made it seem more obvious that it would happen. And now that he's in a feud with Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, even more so.

Buy or Sell?

Buy on all fronts. Of course WWE explored the idea of bringing Lee back and of course the more, the better. There are endless interesting stories Lee and WWE could tell together since her time away from the promotion.

Cena's Final Date?

4 of 5
WWE - Clash In Paris

The Rumor

Elsewhere on the Cena front, WrestleVotes and PWinsider (h/r Rajah.com's Jeff Whalen) have reported that Cena will call it a career on December 13 from the Capitol One Arena in Washington, D.C.

Reaction

That's the date of a Saturday Night's Main Event show for WWE, so there's at least a little credibility to the idea. But the fact WWE still has some really notable dates in New York and Boston, of all places, continues to leave the door open for anything until something is made official.

Buy or Sell?

Buy. WWE seems to be assembling something close to a finalized schedule when it comes to Cena. Plans can change, but still. More interesting might be who he actually has a match with, considering he's already checked off encounters with Cody Rhodes, CM Punk and others, plus has the date with Brock Lesnar coming up quickly.

Brock Lesnar Contract Buzz

5 of 5
WWE - 2025 SummerSlam

The Rumor

And speaking of Lesnar, the question of when and how, among other things, continues to fly. According to Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Whalen), Lesnar recently inked a new contract.

Reaction

No kidding, but here's where things get a little interesting: There was apparently a brief, little bit of time where Lesnar was a free agent because his old deal lapsed and couldn't be extended since he wasn't out due to injury.

Buy or Sell?

Buy. Lesnar was never, ever a threat to leave WWE. And the promotion and those behind it undoubtedly made sure to do everything they could to keep him. While he's surely just part-time, perhaps for good, it makes plenty of sense that this new deal stretches far beyond the initial fight with Cena this month.
