Ashton Jeanty Has 'Nothing Against' Travis Hunter After Comments During Heisman Race
Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty has "nothing against" Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter after his comments last October during the Heisman Trophy race.
"I have nothing against him," Jeanty told Adam Caparell of GQ Sports. "He knows that. I know he has nothing against me. We've talked and we're cool. But if the media likes that we're against each other, go ahead."
Last October, Hunter made his Heisman case and had some words about Jeanty's candidacy during a conversation with former college and NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III and his wife Grete.
"I know I can win it, but I don't know who's there," Hunter said on the Outta Pocket with RGIII podcast (h/t Kaiden Smith of On3.com). "I mean y'all see Ashton Jeanty, it's not like we haven't seen a running back that's good. We haven't seen a player that plays both ways and I'm gonna keep saying that."
Jeanty didn't take offense to it at the time, saying the following to YouTuber Deestroying in a video:
Hunter won the Heisman last year over runner-up Jeanty, although both enjoyed amazing seasons from start to finish.
Hunter caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns (he also rushed for one score) for Colorado last year. On defense, he amassed 36 tackles, 11 pass breakups and four interceptions.
Jeanty was sensational for Boise State, totaling 2,739 yards and 30 touchdowns last year. His 2,601 rushing yards rank second all-time in a single college football season.
For his part, Jeanty felt like he should have won the award.
"I really felt like I should've walked away with the award, but kudos to Travis for winning," Jeanty told reporters on Dec. 15, when Hunter won (h/t ESPN News Services). "But yeah, it's simple as that. Work harder, go harder."
Ultimately, the Heisman race featured two great competitors. Someone had to win, and Hunter came away with the prize. It's clear there's zero bad blood between the two, though.
Interestingly enough, the two will face off on Sunday, Nov. 2, when Hunter's Jags visit Jeanty's Raiders.
