Christian McCaffrey Calf Injury Reportedly Not Sounding 'Alarm Bells' for 49ers
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has appeared on this week's injury report with a calf injury that left him limited at practice Thursday. That ailment naturally raises concerns, considering the 2023 Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year missed the first eight games last season with Achilles tendonitis.
However, this injury isn't sounding any "alarm bells" with the team, according to a report from Tom Pelissero of NFL Network (1:20 mark) on Good Morning Football.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
"I will say this cautiously. Here's what I would tell you. I do not get the sense, based on the conversations I've had so far, that there are alarm bells going off about Christian McCaffrey at this point," Pelissero said.
"If there is any player you are going to take precautions with if he feels something in practice, it's the guy who's arguably your best player and missed most of last season because of a variety of different ailments.
"We also know that calf injuries can be tricky. At times, they are precursors to Achilles injuries. McCaffrey had issues with both his Achilles last year. Again, I do not get the sense that this is DEFCON 1 at this point, but the 49ers will be back out on the field this afternoon.
"[Head coach Kyle Shanahan] will address the media. We'll get a better sense about what, if anything, McCaffrey is going to be available to do when they kick off the season on Sunday against the Seahawks."
McCaffrey returned in Week 10 last year from the Achilles tendonitis injury, but he suffered a PCL sprain against the Buffalo Bills in his fourth game back and missed the remainder of the regular season.
When healthy, McCaffrey is one of the NFL's top offensive weapons. Over 95 career games (88 starts), the former Stanford star has amassed 10,853 total yards and 81 touchdowns. McCaffrey notably had 4,357 yards from scrimmage and 32 touchdowns over a two-year period (2018-2019) with the Carolina Panthers. He also added 3,903 yards and 34 touchdowns for the Panthers and 49ers in 2023.
Injuries, though, have held him out for large swaths of time. He was limited to just 10 games over the 2020 and 2021 seasons. A high-ankle sprain and a shoulder injury sidelined him for 13 of 16 games in 2020. Then a hamstring injury and ankle ailment kept him out in 2021.
Last year, McCaffrey missed most of training camp with a calf injury. He was questionable for the team's Week 1 opener against the New York Jets but ultimately missed that game plus seven more. It turned out he was dealing with bilateral Achilles tendinitis, and he even went to Germany to consult with a specialist.
There's obviously some cause for concern with the latest ailment given McCaffrey's injury history, and the hope is that it's much ado about nothing en route to a healthy season. He's an explosive player when healthy and a major reason why the 49ers won the 2023 NFC Championship and nearly defeated off the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
We'll find out soon enough if McCaffrey is able to go for the team's season opener Sunday at the Seattle Seahawks at 4:05 p.m. ET. If so, it's a great sign for the 49ers, a team that's dealt with a litany of injuries over the years. If not, then the 49ers turn to newly acquired Brian Robinson Jr. from the Washington Commanders as well as Isaac Guerendo to lead the rushing attack.
