US Open Tennis 2025 Top Storylines to Watch in Women's Semifinals Bracket

Joe TanseySep 3, 2025

Two Grand Slam champions and two Americans make up the 2025 US Open women's singles semifinals field.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka will go head-to-head with No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula in a rematch of last year's US Open final.

No. 8 seed Amanda Anisimova is looking to make it into her second straight Grand Slam final, but she has to battle No .23 Naomi Osaka.

Osaka has the most Grand Slam titles among the semifinalists, and at her best, she might be able to take down Sabalenka, who is currently the top women's player on the hard-court surface.

Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova with Chances to Win Home Major

2025 US Open - Day 10

Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova are the only two American singles players left in either men's or women's draws.

Pegula made it to the US Open women's singles final a year ago, but fell short against Aryna Sabalenka.

Pegula has to get past Sabalenka just to reach the final this time around.

Anisimova is the last American woman to reach a Grand Slam final. She was the runner-up at Wimbledon and already avenged that loss to Iga Swiatek in the US Open quarterfinals.

Wins by Pegula and Anisimova would produce the first all-American women's singles final in New York since Sloane Stephens beat Madison Keys in 2017.

At minimum, both players are trying to reach the final to attempt to become just the third American winner of the US Open since 2015.

Naomi Osaka's Resurgent Form

Naomi Osaka is back in a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since the 2021 Australian Open.

Osaka, a four-time major winner, rediscovered her Grand Slam form in New York to reach the semifinals.

Prior to this tournament, Osaka was eliminated at, or before, the third round in 12 consecutive majors.

At her best, Osaka can challenge any of the top players in the women's game, which makes her such a strong contender in the final four.

Osaka owns the edge in Grand Slam semifinal experience over Anisimova, and if their match is tight, that might be the X-factor that puts her into Saturday's final.

Can Anyone Dethrone Aryna Sabalenka?

Aryna Sabalenka is the top seed for a reason.

Sabalenka won three of the last five hard-court majors and reached the final in every hard-court Grand Slam since the start of the 2023 season.

Sabalenka should still be considered the favorite to win, even though Pegula and Anisimova have home-court advantage and Osaka's won more Grand Slams than her.

The top seed also holds an edge in rest. She didn't play in the quarterfinals due to Marketa Vondrousova's injury withdrawal.

A fresh and rested Sabalenka could be the last thing any of the other three semifinalists want to see at this juncture of the tournament.
