Bills GM Said Josh Allen Would Have '0 Chance' to Succeed If Not for Owner Patience

Scott PolacekSep 2, 2025

Patience may be a lost art in the NFL, but it helped Josh Allen become a league MVP.

NFL insider James Palmer revealed on the Scoop City podcast (16:30 mark) that Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane believes the patience team owners Terry and Kim Pegula showed with the young quarterback set him up for success.

"There is zero chance Josh Allen would have gotten to where he's at now if Terry Pegula and Kim Pegula did not give me and Brian Daboll and everybody who was on the staff the patience to let Josh Allen grow," Beane said, via Palmer. "They told us early on we're going to stick with Josh, we're going to be patient with him."

While NFL fans now know Allen as one of the league's best players, he was far from a sure thing when he arrived in Buffalo.

After all, he played collegiately at Wyoming instead of a powerhouse program and was an unfinished product early in his career even as the No. 7 overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft. He went 5-6 as a starter with 10 touchdown passes to 12 interceptions as a rookie and then completed just 58.8 percent of his passes in his second season.

Then everything switched.

Allen was a Pro Bowler in his third season and finished second in MVP voting while going 13-3 as a starter. It was his first of four straight seasons with more than 4,000 passing yards before he won the MVP during the 2024 campaign.

He took multiple years to develop, learn the NFL game and adjust, and now he is an unstoppable dual-threat force who is leading one of the teams on the short list of realistic Super Bowl contenders.

But a less patient team may not have allowed him the time to make all those adjustments.
