Venus Williams, Leylah Fernandez Out of US Open After Loss to No. 1 Townsend-Siniakova
Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez's tremendous run in the US Open women's doubles draw came to an end on Tuesday.
Williams and Fernandez fell to top-ranked Kateřina Siniaková and Taylor Townsend in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-2.
After the win, Siniaková and Townsend will now move on to the semifinals, where they'll face either No. 4 Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens or No. 5 Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider.
Tuesday's loss was less about the effort of Williams and Fernandez and more about how strongly Siniaková and Townsend played. The two came into Tuesday's match having not lost a set in women's doubles, and that remained true against Williams and Fernandez.
Williams and Fernandez, who were competing together for the first time, took down 6-seeded Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez in the first round before taking down Eri Hozumi and Ulrikke Eikeri in straight sets in the second round on Saturday. They advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over No. 12 Zhang Shuai and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
In the US Open mixed doubles, Williams and her partner, Reilly Opelka, lost in the first round, and Williams also faced a first-round exit in women's singles to Karolína Muchová.
The 45-year-old more than made up for her previous early exits with an outstanding run alongside Fernandez. While she and Fernandez weren't able to keep their magical run alive, the fact that they were able to make it to the quarterfinals is still impressive.
Williams also proved that she's still capable of competing with the best despite her veteran status.
