Gabe Davis, Bills Reportedly Agree to Contract as WR Recovers from Knee Injury

Julia StumbaughSep 2, 2025

Free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis is signing with the Buffalo Bills as he continues recovering from the season-ending knee injury he suffered last November, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday.

Davis will initially join the Bills' practice squad, according to Schefter.

After spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Bills, Davis signed a three-year deal with the Jaguars last offseason.

He suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee in Week 11 of last season and was released with a failed physical designation in May.

Davis had previously suffered a PCL sprain in January 2024.

That injury history, in addition to Davis' failed physical and offseason reports regarding his medical status, has raised some questions about the wide receiver's readiness for the 2025 season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly showed interest in Davis earlier this offseason, but WDVE's Mike Prisuta (h/t Penn Live's Nick Farabaugh) reported the team balked after medical follow-ups on his injured knee.

"Gabe Davis was brought in for a medical follow-up. And when he came in free agency, the Steelers did not like, and subsequently other teams have not liked, what they saw from MRIs or whatever it was that they looked at following that knee injury that ended his season last year," Prisuta said last month, per Farabaugh.

For now, Davis is set to continue rehabbing his injury while working with the Bills' practice unit.

Davis originally joined the Bills as a fourth-round pick out of Central Florida in 2020.

He caught attention with a historic four-touchdown postseason outing against the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2021 divisional round.

Although he never broke out as a top wideout option in Buffalo, Davis closed out his first stint with the Bills having caught at least six touchdown passes in each of his four seasons.

Davis went on to struggle with the Jaguars prior to his injury, recording a career-low 12.0 yards per reception and dropping two potential touchdown passes during a Week 6 loss in London.

The Bills could be hoping that giving Davis time to recover from his knee injury, as well as a potential future reunion with Josh Allen, will allow him to bounce back as a depth wideout option ahead of his sixth NFL campaign.

This isn't the first time the Bills have reunited with a former player this offseason. Veteran safety Jordan Poyer, who played with the Bills from 2017 to 2023 before playing for the Miami Dolphins last season, is also set to join Buffalo's practice squad this fall.
