Jaxson Dart Named QB2 over Jameis Winston Behind Russell Wilson on Giants Depth Chart

Julia StumbaughSep 2, 2025

New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has been unofficially promoted to serve as Russell Wilson's backup.

The unofficial Week 1 depth chart released Tuesday by the Giants lists Dart as QB2 over veteran quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Giants are set to open the 2025 season on Sunday with a matinee road game against the Washington Commanders.

Dart was initially listed as QB3 behind Winston on the first unofficial depth chart the Giants released ahead of the preseason opener in August.

The promotion comes after Dart completed 32 of 47 pass attempts through three preseason appearances, recording 372 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions while adding another 52 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Dart helped the Giants close out the preseason on Aug. 21 with a win over the New England Patriots, during which he was involved in an injury scare but ultimately cleared concussion protocol.

After the game, Daboll said the Giants were on a "kind of on a day-to-day plan" with Dart.

"He knows he's got a lot of things to work on. But he's made progress every day," Daboll continued, per NFL.com's Grant Gordon. "I'm glad we drafted him. I'm glad he's our guy."

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo wrote Tuesday that Dart's "ability to handle the games with poise and make quick decisions gave the coaches confidence it won't be too big for him if he's thrust into action in the regular season."

Despite Dart's move up the depth chart, Winston currently appears set to stick around in New York as a third-string option.

Assistant general manager Brandon Brown previously told reporters that the Giants wouldn't be listening to offers for Winston, and Ryan Dunleavy recently reported for the New York Post that NFL teams who had asked about the possibility of trading for Winston had been turned down for the team.
