Backyard Football '99 will be available for PC on Steam and on mobile platforms through the App Store and Google Play.
Per Leia Mendoza of Variety, Backyard Football '99 will include NFL legends Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Drew Bledsoe, Jerry Rice, John Elway, Randall Cunningham and Steve Young, all of whom were featured in the original Backyard Football game.
No mention was made of Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, who was the eighth real player included in the original title.
Marino, who is a Hall of Fame quarterback and Miami Dolphins legend, told Mendoza the following about being involved with Backyard Football once again:
"Bringing this game back to a new generation of fans and reconnecting with the OGs makes me so excited at this moment in time. This moment is ripe for introducing these games because kids today crave connection more than ever, and games like these offer a fantastic platform to experience the fun and excitement of the sport I've loved for so long."
The release of Backyard Football '99 comes on the heels of other recent Backyard Sports re-releases by Playground Productions, including Backyard Baseball '97, Backyard Baseball '01 and Backyard Soccer '98.
In addition to PC and mobile, Backyard Baseball '97 also received console releases on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, but no other Backyard Sports game has followed suit yet.
Backyard Baseball was the original release under the Backyard Sports banner in 1997, and from then through 2015, Backyard Sports games were produced for several different sports, including baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer and skateboarding.
Most of the games featured kid versions of real professional athletes in their respective sports, as well as fictional characters, such as the iconic Pablo Sanchez.
It is expected that more Backyard Sports re-releases are on the way, but Mendoza noted that Playground Productions is also hoping to develop a new game, along with possible TV shows or movies.
