Venus Williams, Leylah Fernandez Beat Zhang, Alexandrova to Reach US Open Doubles QF
Venus Williams is moving on to the quarterfinals of the US Open women's doubles draw.
Williams and her women's doubles partner, Leylah Fernandez, won against 12th-ranked Zhang Shuai and Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round of 16 on Monday, 6-3, 6-4.
Following the win, Williams and Fernandez will now face either top-ranked Kateřina Siniaková and Taylor Townsend or Camila Osorio and Yuan Yue.
While Williams and the 22-year-old Fernandez are playing in their first tournament together, the chemistry is already there. It was on full display during Monday's quarterfinal matchup.
Williams and Fernandez started the doubles tournament off strong, knocking off 6-seeded Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez in the first round before taking down Eri Hozumi and Ulrikke Eikeri in straight sets in the second round on Saturday.
For much of her career, Williams competed alongside her sister, tennis legend Serena Williams. Last week, she likened Fernandez's mentality to that of Serena.
"I never really played with a partner, outside of [sister Serena Williams], obviously, who had [this] kind of mentality," she told reporters Thursday. "So it was really fun, and I think we can just hopefully continue to get better."
After Monday's win, Williams called for her sister to re-join her on the court when asked about possibly teaming up at the Australian Open next year.
Unfortunately for Williams, she didn't have as much success in the mixed doubles and women's singles portions of the US Open. In mixed doubles, she and her partner, Reilly Opelka, faced a first-round exit. She also lost in the first round of women's singles to Karolína Muchová.
While she didn't get the results she wanted earlier in the tournament, the fact that Williams is able to stay competitive at 45 years old is a feat of its own. Now, she and Fernandez are one step closer to leaving the US Open with some hardware.
