The Pittsburgh Steelers rewarded one of their rising young stars ahead of the start of the 2025 season.

The Steelers signed running back Jaylen Warren to a two-year contract extension, his agency announced on Monday. The 2022 undrafted speedster is entering his first year as Pittsburgh's starting running back.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Warren's extension will pay him over $7 million this year and includes $12 million guaranteed. Warren's new deal will be added to a Steelers salary cap that currently sits at $259.1 million, per Spotrac, putting them $20 million under the NFL salary cap of $279.2 million.

Warren was previously set to play the 2025 season on a one-year deal after signing a restricted free agent tender worth $5.3 million in April, so Monday's deal gives him more security.

The 26-year-old has played in 48 games in Pittsburgh across three years with no starts, recording 1,674 yards and six touchdowns on 346 carries while also adding 127 catches for 894 yards.

After playing behind Najee Harris throughout his career, Warren is listed first on the Steelers' depth chart for the 2025 season after Harris signed with the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason. Rookie running back Kaleb Johnson, a third-round pick out of Iowa, will be the backup, and veteran Kenneth Gainwell is the No. 3 running back.

The offense in Pittsburgh is expected to look very different this year following the arrival of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The team further revamped its passing attack by acquiring star receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks and shipping wideout George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

Monday's extension is a sign that the Steelers feel that Warren is a key part of their future as they try to compete for a spot in the Super Bowl this season and beyond. Pittsburgh will open the 2025 campaign on Sunday against the New York Jets.
