Per David Ornstein of The Athletic, Liverpool reached an agreement to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for $176 million (£130m), setting a record for a Premier League transfer.

Ornstein reported that Liverpool previously offered $148.6 million (£110m) for Isak, but Newcastle rejected the deal in hopes of earning an offer of at least $162 million (£120m). Isak publicly expressed his desire to leave Newcastle, releasing a statement earlier this month saying that his relationship with the club "can't continue." He sat out the entire preseason and the first three Premier League games of the 2025 campaign.

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading," Isak wrote. "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself."

Now that he's got his wish, Isak should make an immediate impact for his new club. The 25-year-old is one of the most talented young players in the Premier League. He ranked second in the EPL last season with 23 goals in 34 appearances, trailing only Mohamed Salah's 29. Now, the two of them are teaming together for Liverpool.

This continues a summer spending spree for Liverpool, who already shelled out more than $337.7 million (£250m) to add Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni.

The reigning Premier League champions have opened the 2025 season with three straight victories: 4-2 over Bournemouth, 3-2 stoppage-time win over Newcastle and a 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday. Adding Isak gives Liverpool even more firepower as they chase a second straight title this year.
