Williams has struggled on the singles side of things later in her career, including a first-round ouster against Karolína Muchová at the U.S. Open.
But she has looked very good in the doubles tournament thus far, including the first-round upset of 6-seeded Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez.
On Saturday, Williams and Fernandez had four aces, won 74 percent of their first-serve points, finished 4-of-7 on break points and won an opening-set tiebreaker for the second straight match.
And the pair are seem to be developing excellent chemistry. Fernandez was certainly excited when their partnership formed.
"I was like a kid on Christmas day just jumping around," she told reporters Thursday. "I was so happy. I don't think I stopped smiling for the whole night and even in the morning. I was just super happy and excited."
Williams, meanwhile, offered high praise to her new playing partner.
"I never really played with a partner, outside of [sister Serena Williams], obviously, who had [this] kind of mentality," she said Thursday. "So it was really fun, and I think we can just hopefully continue to get better."
So far, they appear to be doing so.
