Shilo Sanders Fined for Punch Caught on Video That Led to NFL Preseason Ejection
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Shilo Sanders has been fined $4,669 for throwing a punch during a preseason matchup against the Buffalo Bills last week that led to his ejection.
Sanders was released by the Buccaneers last week as part of roster cuts to get down to the required 53-man roster. He cleared waivers without being claimed by another NFL team, and the Bucs didn't sign him to its practice squad. He hasn't latched on with a practice squad elsewhere to this point.
"You can't throw punches in this league. I mean, that's inexcusable," Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles told reporters after the ejection. "They're gonna get you every time. Gotta grow from that."
As for his future in the NFL, Sanders said he's considering a different career path in music, modeling or acting.
"I'll be talking to my agent and we're waiting on the next opportunity," he said on social media. "If that's in the NFL, cool, but god has blessed me with a lot of talent to do things other than football."
His father, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, previously told reporters that he wasn't worried about Shilo's future.
"We're praying that he gets another opportunity to go with a team, but if he doesn't, the plans have already been put forward to what he's going to do next," he said. "So, Shilo is a man of many talents. I don't know if you guys know. He's a man of many talents, and he's gonna be straight."
Shilo Sanders was always a long shot to stick with the Buccaneers after being an undrafted free agent. Tampa had solid depth at safety, though the fact that he didn't stick around on its practice squad—or land on a different one—is telling.
