Packers' Matthew Golden Switches to No. 0 Jersey, 1st in GB History to Wear Number
Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden announced Saturday that he is changing his jersey to No. 0.
The Packers later confirmed the change, making Golden the first player to wear No. 0 in the illustrious history of the organization:
After the Packers acquired superstar pass-rusher Micah Parsons in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Cowboys this week, there was some thought that Parsons would take No. 0.
Since wide receiver Jayden Reed wears the same No. 11 that Parsons wore in Dallas, Parsons took to X to ask if he should choose No. 0 or No. 1:
Parsons ultimately went with No. 1, making him the first Packers player to wear the number since the organization's founder and namesake of Lambeau Field, Curly Lambeau, donned it from 1925 to 1926.
Throughout training camp and the preseason, Golden wore No. 22, which is a unique jersey number for a wideout. It was clearly an homage to the No. 2 he wore collegiately at Texas.
Currently, No. 2 is occupied by the Packers' backup quarterback in Malik Willis.
The 22-year-old Golden began his college career at Houston before transferring to Texas. He enjoyed his best collegiate season in 2024, recording 58 receptions for 987 yards and nine touchdowns.
Golden then ran the 40-yard dash in a blazing 4.29 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, which pushed him into first-round pick territory.
The Packers selected him with the No. 23 overall pick, making Golden the first wideout selected by Green Bay in the first round since Javon Walker in 2002.
Golden is part of a talented group of pass-catchers in Green Bay with wideouts Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks and Christian Watson, and tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave.
However, Watson could miss much or all of the 2025 season as he recovers from a torn ACL, and Reed is working through a foot injury.
Because of that, Golden could very well open his rookie season as quarterback Jordan Love's No. 1 option in the passing game despite being No. 0 in the team's program.
