US Open Tennis 2025 Results, Winners, Losers and Highlights from Friday's Bracket

One of the top American title contenders was forced to leave the 2025 US Open due to injury on Friday afternoon.

Ben Shelton suffered a shoulder injury during his third-round match against Adrian Mannarino.

Shelton attempted to power through the match with the injury, but he was forced o retire from the match after the fourth set.

Shelton's departure from the men's singles draw opened up an easier path to the final for Carlos Alcaraz, who does not have to face anyone seeded above 20th until the semifinals.

There was some positive news for the American contingent on Friday, as Jessica Pegula won in straight sets to move on to the fourth round of the women's singles draw.

Friday finished on a high for the Americans, as Taylor Townsend upset No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Taylor Fritz, the top-ranked American male, also moved on with a late-night victory in four sets.

Jessica Pegula produced a straight-set win over three-time US Open finalist Victoria Azarenka.

Pegula, who reached her first Grand Slam final in New York last year, handled Azarenka with ease in the first set before she battled to a 7-5 second-set win to close out the win.

Pegula will be heavily favored in the fourth round against an unseeded opponent.

There were a few upsets on Friday to top-10 seeds. No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini fell to Marketa Vondrousova and No. 10 seed Emma Navarro lost to Barbora Krejcikova.

Vondrousova will play No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina in the fourth round. Rybakina had an easy afternoon of work against Emma Raducanu.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka wasn't even close to losing on Friday night. She took care of Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. Another straight-set win is expected for Sabalenka in the fourth round against the unseeded Cristina Bucsa.

The biggest news from the women's singles draw came from Friday's final match, as Taylor Townsend knocked off No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva in straight sets.

Next up for Townsend is Krejcikova, who is unseeded but a two-time major champion.

Shelton's retirement from the tournament came after the end of the fourth set against Mannarino.

Prior to the retirement, Shelton put on a show inside Louis Armstrong Stadium against the French lefty.

Shelton's departure means that Carlos Alcaraz can likely cruise into the semifinals.

The second-seeded Spaniard has two unseeded players and No. 20 seed Jiri Lehecka left in his quarter of the draw.

Alcaraz looked strong once again on Friday with a straight-set triumph over No. 32 seed Luciano Darderi.

Novak Djokovic produced another four-set triumph on Friday night over Cameron Norrie.

Djokovic has an easy path to the quarterfinals on paper after Jan-Lennard Struff knocked out No. 17 seed Frances Tiafoe.

An easier match might be what Djokovic needs to prepare for a potential semifinal clash with Alcaraz.

Taylor Fritz could disrupt any talk of a Djokovic-Alcaraz showdown. The fourth-seeded American is one step away from meeting Djokovic in the quarters after his four-set triumph on Friday.
