Micah Parsons Trade from Cowboys Draws Luka Doncic to Lakers Comparisons from NFL Fans

Zach BacharAug 28, 2025

The Dallas Cowboys sent star pass-rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in a surprising blockbuster trade on Thursday.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Dallas sent Parsons to Green Bay before the Packers game him a massive four-year contract extension worth $188 million.

The Cowboys received defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round picks in return, per Schefter.

After a team from Dallas decided to part ways with its homegrown star, fans immediately drew comparisons to the Dallas Mavericks' decision to send star forward Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in a shocking swap during the 2024-25 season.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars took the opportunity to assure fans that superstar right winger Mikko Rantanen wouldn't be experiencing a change of scenery as well.

The situations involving Dončić and Parsons aren't identical, but they do have quite a few similarities.

While Dončić never requested a trade from the organization, the Mavericks still decided to part ways with the five-time All-Star partially due to reported concerns surrounding a future long-term financial commitment.

As for Parsons, his trade request on Aug. 1 stemmed from contract extension discussions with the Cowboys' front office breaking down.

Both Dončić and Parsons are 26 years old and were selected with first-round draft picks by their respective teams. The two quickly blossomed into stars, with Dončić earning Rookie of the Year honors for the 2018-19 season and Parsons taking home the Defensive Rookie of the Year award for his 2021 campaign.

Dončić remained effective following the trade last season, averaging 28.2 points and 8.1 rebounds to go along with 7.5 assists per game on 43.8/37.9/79.1 shooting splits with the Lakers.

The Packers will be hoping that Parsons doesn't show any signs of slowing down either. The four-time Pro Bowler was limited to just 13 games in 2024 due to an ankle injury, but still racked up 12 sacks and two forced fumbles.

It won't be long before Dallas sees Parsons again, as the Cowboys and Packers are set to face off at AT&T Stadium on Sept. 28.
