Rangers' Corey Seager to Have Appendicitis Surgery, Will Be out for 'Period of Time'

Zach BacharAug 28, 2025

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager has appendicitis and is set to undergo surgery, per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young revealed that Seager's 2025 season isn't guaranteed to be over following the procedure, but he'll be "out a period of time" as he recovers and attempts to make his way back onto the field.

With the 31-year-old out, the team selected the contract of Dylan Moore in a corresponding move, per ESPN's Kiley McDaniel. He's set to join the team during an upcoming matchup with the Athletics.

Seager's extended absence will be a tough blow to the Rangers as they attempt to make a postseason push, currently sitting 4.5 games back from the final American League wild card spot with a 68-67 record.

The five-time All-Star has remained an important piece of Texas' lineup in his fourth year with the team, recording 21 home runs and 19 doubles to go along with 50 RBI in 102 games.

Seager is hitting .271 on the season and has been particularly sharp at the plate as of late, owning a .400/.488/.714 slash line with three homers over his past 10 games.

With Seager out, infielder Josh Smith is the top candidate to replace him at shortstop moving forward. The 28-year-old has already appeared in 121 games this season, racking up nine home runs and 32 RBI while posting a .711 OPS.

Moore could also see action at shortstop as well as second base.
