Jordan Poyer, Bills Agree to Contract Ahead of 2025 NFL Season

Julia StumbaughAug 27, 2025

Veteran free agent safety Jordan Poyer is returning to the Buffalo Bills after one season with the Miami Dolphins, his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln told NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Poyer is expected to join the Bills' practice squad, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

The 34-year-old previously played in Buffalo from 2017 to 2023. He earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods with the team in 2021 and 2022.

He signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Dolphins last season before posting 98 combined tackles through 16 games in Miami.

Poyer, who had served as a team captain for four straight seasons, was initially released by the Bills in March 2024 so the team could save about $5.7 million in cap space.

The safety then signed with the Dolphins, although he said in a May appearance on Good Morning Football that the transition to Florida had not worked out for him.

"Last year was extremely tough year on so many levels. Our team wasn't very good, I didn't play as well as I wanted to play," Poyer said in May. "It was just a really tough year, transitioning from Buffalo to Miami. Cultures being different, systems being different. It just didn't work out the way anyone had hoped."

Poyer added, "It'd be ideal to have a fantasy ending and be able to retire a Bill, but who knows?"

The veteran safety could now get the chance to finish out his NFL career in Buffalo.

Four safeties were listed on the final roster the Bills published Tuesday, with Taylor Rapp and Cole Bishop set to start ahead of backups Damar Hamlin and Jordan Hancock. Darrick Forrest, signed as a veteran free-agent addition earlier this offseason, was among the team's final roster cuts.

Both Rapp (knee) and Bishop (quad) have missed time due to injury during training camp, and Bishop is looking to take a step forward during his second NFL season.

Having Poyer in the fold as a veteran option could provide some insurance in case of further injuries or a step back from Bishop this fall.
