Tommy DeVito Reportedly Released by Giants, Wilson, Winston, Dart to be QB Room

Adam WellsAug 26, 2025

In a move that wasn't a surprise given the top of their quarterback room, the Tommy DeVito era has come to an end for the New York Giants.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Giants released DeVito ahead of the NFL's roster cutdown deadline on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

This leaves the Giants with Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston as their top three quarterbacks entering the regular season.

Even though the odds were against DeVito making the Giants' 53-man roster, he put together a strong preseason that at least made the coaching staff think hard about the decision.

DeVito went 30-of-38 for 323 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in three games in the preseason.

Unfortunately, the numbers were working against DeVito throughout the offseason. They signed Wilson and Winston in free agents to improve their depth at the position, then traded back into the first round of the draft to select Dart with pick No. 25.

Head coach Brian Daboll said at the start of training camp that Wilson would be the Week 1 starter entering the regular season. Dart's strong showing throughout the preseason has at least kept the door open for the rookie to potentially pass Wilson on the depth chart.

There was an argument to carry DeVito over Winston based on their preseason play. Winston was just 17-of-30 for 219 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in three games.

DeVito is more versatile than Winston with his ability to make plays out of the pocket, but Winston's arm strength allows him to make big throws down the field.

Tuesday's decision marks the end of DeVito's two-year run with the Giants. He originally joined the club as an undrafted free agent out of Syracuse in April 2023. The 27-year-old appeared in 12 games over two seasons, going 3-5 in eight starts.

DeVito threw for 1,358 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. It won't be a surprise if he catches on with another club as a backup option before the start of the season given how effective he has been when he has been called upon.
