Brian Robinson Says 49ers Have 'Best Duo' in NFL with Christian McCaffrey After Trade

Zach BacharAug 25, 2025

New San Francisco 49ers running back Brian Robinson Jr. is excited to form a backfield duo with Christian McCaffrey.

"My job right now is to complement him the best way I can and we're gonna be the best duo in the league," Robinson told reporters Monday.

The 49ers acquired Robinson in a trade with the Washington Commanders on Sunday, sending out a 2026 sixth-round pick in return.

The 26-year-old should immediately contribute in San Francisco's offense once the regular season begins, as the team experienced issues with running back depth prior to the swap.

Jordan James missed most of training camp with a broken finger, while Patrick Taylor Jr. suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the preseason. Isaac Guerendo has also been plagued by shoulder issues.

As for Robinson, he's coming off a 2024 campaign in which he rushed for 799 yards and eight touchdowns on 187 carries. He also hauled in 20 receptions for 159 yards.

While Robinson provides experience behind McCaffrey in case of an injury, he should also form an intriguing duo with the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year when both players are healthy.

San Francisco will certainly be hoping that the two players can replicate the success of other top running back duos in the league such as Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery of the Detroit Lions, with both players combining to record 3,045 yards from scrimmage and 32 total touchdowns in 2024.

The first opportunity for McCaffrey and Robinson to take the field will come on Sept. 7, as the 49ers travel to face the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field in Week 1.
