Texans' Joe Mixon Out At Least 4 Games After Going on Reserve/Non-Football Injury List

Zach BacharAug 25, 2025

The Houston Texans will place running back Joe Mixon on the reserve/non-football injury list to open the 2025 season, the team announced Monday.

Mixon will be forced to miss a minimum of four games as a result.

The 29-year-old has been battling a foot injury throughout the offseason, as he opened training camp on the non-football injury list.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Mixon was in a walking boot at one point in the spring after suffering an injury during individual offseason workouts.

Wilson reported Monday that the running back's rehab process has been "tough and complicated."

ESPN's Adam Schefter noted on his podcast that there has been plenty of mystery surrounding the injury, and he questioned "when or if Joe Mixon is going to play this season" (17:00 in video):

Mixon is entering his second season with Houston after spending the first seven years of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. He appeared in 14 games during his inaugural season on the Texans, missing time with an ankle injury.

Still, Mixon made his presence felt in Houston's offense when healthy. He rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns while recording 36 catches for 309 yards as a receiver.

Mixon ended up earning the second Pro Bowl nod of his career for his efforts.

The Texans will rely on several contributors to make up for his upcoming absence, starting with Nick Chubb. Houston signed the four-time Pro Bowl running back to a one-year deal in June and he should receive the bulk of the available carries with Mixon out.

Former fourth-round pick Dameon Pierce and rookie Woody Marks will likely also get more opportunities in the Texans' backfield.

As for Mixon, his first chance to make his season debut will come against the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 5.
