"As the NFL continues to evolve, we are partnering with brands that share our strategic vision," said Tracie Rodburg, senior vice president of global partnerships at the NFL, in Monday's announcement. "Naming Abercrombie & Fitch as an official sponsor reinforces our position as a growing leader in the fashion community, creating deeper connections with our fans at the convergence of fandom and fashion and celebrating our players' dynamic style."

Abercrombie first struck a deal with the NFL in 2022 to produce licensed apparel. This expands that partnership and breaks new ground for the league as this is the first such agreement for an official fashion provider.

Abercrombie will now have the opportunity to work directly with some NFL players and outfit them with tailored apparel on game days and other notable occasions.

Elizabeth Segran of Fast Company made a comparison to how tunnel walks have become a way for NBA and WNBA players to show off their fashion sense.

"To this end, Abercrombie's Style Concierge is an effort to help elevate players' style," Segran wrote. "Players can request these styling services, which will give them access to an on-call Abercrombie stylist, as well as lots of free clothing to wear in tunnels and in other off-field appearances. In return, they may appear in Abercrombie's marketing campaigns and social media."

Abercrombie, meanwhile, gets to expand its NFL-related offerings and have a presence during the league's major events.

Last October, the NFL created the role of fashion editor and named Kyle Smith to the job. It's not as though the league is hurting for relevancy, but the NFL is clearly making an effort to widen its brand beyond what happens on the field.
