Novak Djokovic (7) def. Learner Tien

1 of 5
2025 US Open - Day 1

Novak Djokovic, the 38-year-old tennis icon, defeated rising 19-year-old Learner Tien in straight sets on Sunday night 6-1, 7-6 (3), 6-2—but not without a challenge in the second. Despite dealing with visible discomfort from a right big toe issue, Djokovic powered through to close out the match and advance to the second round.

Tien, making his Arthur Ashe Stadium night session debut, showed flashes of potential but was ultimately outmatched in his first meeting with Djokovic. He tallied 25 unforced errors and five double faults across the first two sets, which undercut any early momentum.

The young American, who stunned Daniil Medvedev in a five-set battle at the Australian Open earlier this season, appeared shaken by the occasion as he faced the 24-time Grand Slam winner in front of a packed crowd of over 23,000.

Djokovic will take on Zachary Svajda in the second round on Wednesday.

Jessica Pegula (4) def. Mayar Sherif

2 of 5
2025 US Open - Day 1

Jessica Pegula cruised through her opening match with a straight-sets win over Mayar Sherif, 6-0, 6-4, capping off the night for the women and advancing to the second round.

Pegula dominated early, taking the first six games, but Sherif pushed back in the second set with aggressive baseline play that briefly unsettled the American. Pegula ultimately sealed the win with a sharp cross-court forehand and will face Anna Blinkova next in what promises to be a competitive second-round clash.

Aryana Sabalenka (1) def. Rebeka Masarova

3 of 5
2025 US Open - Day 1

Aryna Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, has reached at least the quarterfinals in each of her last 11 Grand Slam main draw appearances—and she looks poised to continue that streak after defeating Rebeka Masarova, 7-5, 6-1, on Sunday in the first round of the U.S. Open.

The defending champion was tested in a competitive first set against the 109th-ranked Masarova, but quickly found her rhythm in the second, showcasing the dominance that earned her the tournament's No. 1 seed.

Aryna Sabalenka will face Polina Kudermetova in the second round. Kudermetova advanced after her opponent, Nuria Parrizas Diaz, retired with the score tied at 2-2 in the first set due to a twisted ankle.

First-round play will continue Monday, Aug. 25.

Taylor Fritz (4) def. Emilio Nava

4 of 5
2025 US Open - Day 1

Taylor Fritz defeated wild card Emilio Nava in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3, on Sunday as he began his quest to return to the U.S. Open final following last year's loss to top-ranked Jannik Sinner, 3-6, 4-6, 5-7.

Nava held his own in a competitive first set against his fellow American but couldn't keep up with the red-hot No. 4 seed, who took command in the second and third sets to close out the match.

Fritz will play the winner of the first-round match between Sebastian Baez and Lloyd Harris, scheduled for Monday.

Emma Navarro (10) def. Wang Yafan

5 of 5
2025 US Open - Day 1

Emma Navarro defeated Wang Yafan in straight sets, earning a hard-fought 7-6 (9), 6-3 victory in the first round of the U.S. Open. She secured the opening set in a tiebreak that lasted over an hour and 15 minutes, sealing it on a second serve that forced an error from Yafan. Navarro cruised through the second set to close out the match.

The win comes as Navarro looks to rebound from her first career slump, following disappointing losses to lower-seeded players at the French Open and Cincinnati Open.

Navarro reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open last year, where she fell to Aryna Sabalenka, 6-3, 7-6 (2).

She will face Caty McNally in the second round on Wednesday. McNally is coming off a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Jil Teichmann.
